The origins of Bhadraj Temple trace back to the Dwapar Yug, shortly after the Mahabharat war. According to legend, Lord Balram, after completing his earthly duties, embarked on a journey for penance. He arrived in the quaint village of Binhar and was filled with peace and joy. The local villagers were known for their hospitality, taking great care of their cattle and worshipping nature. Touched by their devotion and simplicity, Lord Balram decided to stay there and meditate.

During his stay, he shared his wisdom with the shepherds, teaching them about warfare and guiding them spiritually. Eventually, he left for Badrinath, promising to return in a different form. True to his word, he returned as a statue years later.

The Story of Nandu Mehra

The legend takes an interesting turn with the story of Nandu Mehra, a villager searching for Ayurvedic herbs along the banks of the Yamuna River. During his search, he heard a mysterious voice urging him to dig at a specific spot. To his astonishment, he unearthed a statue of Lord Balram. Guided again by the divine voice, he was instructed to carry the statue to a high-altitude location and place it where it felt the heaviest.

As Nandu carried the statue, it remained light until he reached Bhadraj, where it suddenly became extremely heavy — a divine sign that this was the chosen location. Thus, the temple was established there. On his way, when he felt thirsty, the same voice asked him to dig at a spot on the hill, where he discovered a water source that remains active to this day. This miraculous site is located at Matogi village in Binhar and continues to be a source of wonder for devotees.

 My Experience – Rain, Forests & Unexpected Solitude

I visited Bhadrak Temple during the rainy season with a close friend — and surprisingly, we were the only ones on the trail. The path winds through dense forest, and at one point, the eerie silence and mist genuinely spooked us. But we kept going.
