CHOPTA – THE MINI SWITZERLAND OF UTTARAKHAND
Tucked away in the heart of Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district, Chopta is a serene hill station perched at an elevation of approximately 2,700 meters above sea level. Fondly called the “Mini Switzerland of India”, Chopta is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, snow-covered Himalayan peaks, and vibrant green meadows (locally known as bugyals). With its rich biodiversity, calm atmosphere, and easy access to some of the most sacred shrines in Hinduism, Chopta has become a year-round haven for nature lovers, trekkers, and spiritual seekers alike.
A Scenic Retreat Amidst the Himalayas
Chopta is surrounded by dense forests dominated by Deodar, Oak, and Rhododendron trees, making it an ecological treasure and a tranquil retreat. The hill station offers stunning views of major Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba, and is becoming increasingly popular among Indian as well as international tourists.
The Gateway to Treks and Temples
Chopta serves as the base point for treks to Tungnath and Chandrashila, two of the most popular destinations for adventure seekers and devotees alike. It's also a vital part of the Panch Kedar circuit — five revered Shiva temples scattered across the Garhwal region. The temples of Kedarnath and Madmaheshwar lie to the west of Chopta, while Rudranath and Kalpeshwar are on its eastern side.
TUNGNATH TEMPLE – THE HIGHEST SHIVA TEMPLE IN THE WORLD
At an altitude of 3,680 meters, Tungnath holds the distinction of being the world’s highest Shiva temple. It is one of the five Panch Kedar shrines and has immense mythological significance. Believed to be over 1,000 years old, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and features stunning stone architecture in a peaceful alpine setting.
According to legend, this is where the arms of Lord Shiva in the form of a bull (after he tried to elude the Pandavas) appeared. The Pandavas later constructed the temple to seek his blessings and atonement for their sins from the Kurukshetra war.
The temple is usually open from April to November, and in the winter months, the deity is worshipped at Ukhimath, the winter seat of Lord Kedarnath.
CHANDRASHILA TREK – A JOURNEY TO THE MOON ROCK
Situated at a height of approximately 4,000 meters, Chandrashila, meaning "Moon Rock", is a majestic summit offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayas, including peaks like Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, and Trishul.
Trek Details:
- Starting Point: Chopta
- Trek Distance: Around 5 kilometers (one-way)
- Duration: 4–5 hours (round trip for fit trekkers)
- Difficulty Level: Moderate to Challenging
- Best Season: March to June & September to November
The Chandrashila trek via Tungnath is one of the most rewarding short treks in India. It starts from Chopta, ascends through scenic meadows and forests to the Tungnath Temple, and further climbs to Chandrashila summit. The final leg from Tungnath to Chandrashila is steeper and more strenuous but truly worth the effort.
On reaching the summit, trekkers are greeted with surreal vistas that feel almost divine, especially during sunrise and sunset. During winters, the entire trail is covered in snow, offering a magical experience for snow trekking enthusiasts.
UKHIMATH – THE WINTER ABODE OF LORD KEDARNATH
Located just 45 kilometers from Chopta, Ukhimath is a culturally significant town where the idol of Lord Kedarnath is shifted during winter when the main Kedarnath temple becomes inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.
WHEN TO VISIT CHOPTA
- Summer (April to June): Pleasant climate, perfect for trekking and camping.
- Monsoon (July to September): Lush greenery, though landslides can occur.
- Winter (October to February): Snow-covered landscapes; ideal for snow trekking, but very cold.
Chopta is more than just a hill station — it’s an immersive experience into nature, adventure, and spirituality. Whether you’re looking to trek to high-altitude temples, witness Himalayan wildlife, or simply disconnect from the noise of city life, Chopta offers a soulful escape. With its increasing popularity, yet still unspoiled charm, Chopta truly lives up to its title as “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand.”
