Story: A Myth Wakes Up in the Modern World
Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra starts in a quiet Karnataka town, where a mysterious young woman named Chandra arrives from Sweden. She works a night-shift job, keeps to herself and stays mostly indoors. Locals notice something strange about her, especially Sunny, an MBBS dropout who lives across the street with his friends. What begins as curiosity soon turns into suspicion. Chandra is quiet, sharp, and reacts to things long before they happen. Nobody knows who she really is.
As the nights pass, crimes begin rising in the area. Women go missing, and a brutal organ-trafficking group operates in the shadows. Chandra steps in when she senses danger, and for the first time, her true nature begins to show. Instead of running, she fights back with inhuman speed and strength. Even her wounds seem unnatural. Sunny and his friends witness these moments and realise she is not just another girl trying to live a peaceful life.
The truth is slowly revealed: Chandra is the rebirth of Kalliyankattu Neeli, a centuries-old myth from South Indian folklore. She has lived multiple lives, always waking up when evil rises beyond control. The organ-trafficking gang is just the beginning. Their leader, along with a corrupt police officer named Nachiyappa, becomes her biggest threat. During a confrontation, Nachiyappa gets bitten by Chandra and begins turning into a yaksha. His strength and rage grow as he transforms into something monstrous.
Soon the town becomes a battleground between Chandra and the rising supernatural enemy. Chandra is powerful but not invincible. Sunlight weakens her, and an attack on her heart can kill her permanently. These vulnerabilities give her enemies hope and force her to risk everything.
The climax is intense, dark and action-packed. Chandra destroys the trafficking syndicate and confronts the transformed police officer. The fight exposes her identity to the world. She knows her existence can no longer remain hidden.
After the main story ends, the film closes with a mid-credits twist and a post-credit reveal. A mysterious man known as the Odiyan makes an appearance, hinting at a larger universe filled with more supernatural beings. His arrival confirms that Chandra’s story is only the beginning. Lokah is not just one movie — it is a full cinematic universe waiting to expand in future chapters.

Budget vs Collection: A Blockbuster Rise
The film was planned as a large-scale commercial entertainer. It needed strong visuals, action scenes, VFX and a well-built fantasy world. Because of this, the makers invested significantly into production, CGI and post-production.
Budget
The reported production budget was around ₹30 crore, which is a high range for a Malayalam superhero-fantasy film. From action scenes to stunt work and creature transformation effects, the film avoided shortcuts and delivered world-class visuals despite being made in a regional industry.
Domestic Box Office (India)
From the first day, the film opened strongly. Word of mouth spread quickly because audiences were curious about a female-led superhero story rooted in Indian folklore. Collections grew day by day. In the first two weeks, the film crossed ₹100 crore in India and continued running strongly. By the end of its theatrical run, the domestic net collection reached around ₹120–130 crore.
Worldwide Collection
Global audiences, especially Malayali viewers outside India, turned the film into a massive hit overseas. Good reviews, strong visuals and emotional storytelling helped it cross ₹300 crore worldwide. This achievement placed Lokah among the top-grossing Malayalam films ever.
Profit and Return
With a budget of around ₹30 crore and a worldwide collection of more than ₹300 crore, the film earned nearly ten times what was spent on making it. That level of return is rare and impressive, especially for a film built on a new universe and a non-traditional female superhero lead.
Why Lokah Became Special
- It introduced a female-led superhero character rooted in Indian mythology, not Hollywood-style fantasy.
- It built a cinematic universe, something not commonly attempted in Malayalam cinema.
- The action and VFX were praised across languages, attracting a wider audience.
- Strong performances and emotional depth made it more than just a visual spectacle.
Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra proved that creative ideas, strong writing, and bold filmmaking can bring massive results. It opened the door for more chapters, new characters, and an entire world of folklore-based superheroes. The ending clearly promises sequels, crossovers and bigger conflicts.
The film is not just a box-office success. It is a milestone — a reminder that regional cinema can create its own cinematic universes without copying anyone else.
